Divorce costs can differ because of a number of factors such as whether the dissolution is contested or uncontested, how many issues must be settled, and how long the divorce process takes.
There are fixed costs and variable divorce costs. Fixed costs are court filing and fees paid to have legal papers served on your spouse. Depending on your state these costs can range between $200 to $500.

Variable costs would include fees such as document preparation and legal representation by an attorney. Depending upon the complexity of the case attorney’s fees can vary greatly. If the court orders mediation of disputed issues, extra costs may also come into play especially if a financial analyst is needed to determine complex property issues

A number of factors will determine how long it takes to get a divorce. Some of these are legal requirements, which vary by state.

Residency requirements. This is the length of time one or both parties must be a resident of the state. Some states this wont matter but others could require one year.

Separation requirements. In some states, you and your spouse must be living separately for a certain time period which could be up to three years in order to obtain a divorce.

Waiting periods. A number of states require that a certain amount of time passes after filing for divorce before you can schedule a court hearing or entering a final judgment. Some waiting periods can be up to 90 days.
